There was just something so peaceful about owning your own place. Especially a house. It had been awhile since I lived in a house. At the moment I was mowing my lawn. It was fun I even had my own lawnmower. It was a push one but still... It was nice.

I loved my little house. It was mine. It was no one else's. It was mine. I liked the thought of owning something. Especially something like a house. It meant I was going to stay in one spot for a longer period of time than I was used to. I'd been moving around so much that I couldn't remember what settling down was like.

Just because he'd been out of physical therapy for nearly a decade didn't mean Emmanuel wasn't keeping up with his exercising. The leg still gave him trouble if he didn't use it enough or sometimes when the weather changed, so he found it best to go for a short jog every morning. It also gave him a chance to explore his new neighborhood. He'd taken a different route every day so far.

This time, Em managed to get a bit turned around, a few blocks farther than he was used to going. To top it off, there was a storm coming in that evening, and he could feel his knee starting to throb. His right foot hit the ground a little too hard, jarring up his bad leg and sending a painful twinge from knee to hip.

"Ah, bloody hell," he hissed, stumbling to a stop. He rubbed just above his knee, through the brace, easing through the cramp. As he straightened up and tested out the joint, extending it gingerly, he took a drag off his water bottle and looked up to notice a man mowing his lawn in front of the house beside him. Em nodded at the man in greeting. "Mornin', neighbor."

I was almost done when I saw a guy running down the street. He was shirtless... Uh... He had a brace on his knee and was rubbing it. I was trying not to stare but... Then he spoke. Oh, uh, what's the polite thing to say... Ummm.... Gosh why was this so hard. I waved. "Hello, there, I decided to reply. That seemed polite. I was looked at my lawn. It looked owed enough so I decided to turn off the mower and walk over to the man, to properly introduce myself. "Looks like you're in some pain there. I'm Houston Witkowski. Uh, do you take anything for that... Cause I think I might have some pain killers..." Was that right? Was that something people say? Gosh I can be so socially... awkward.

He hadn't exactly expected the guy to stop what he was doing, but a friendly neighbor was hardly unwelcome. Especially a pleasantly sweaty, cute neighbor...focus, Em. Focus. Ooh, and an American accent to boot...focus!

"Uh, yeah," Emmanuel said with a nod. "No big deal, just an old injury. It acts up when the air pressure changes." He held out a hand to shake, keeping his weight on his left leg. "Emmanuel Parsons. I live a few blocks down on Cedar."

He considered shaking off the man's offer of help and just continuing, but when Em tested out putting weight on his bad leg, a grimace crossed his face. "You know, if it's not too much trouble, would you mind if I just sit on your porch a few minutes?" Was that a weird thing to ask of a neighbor you'd never met? No stranger than offering pain pills to a stranger, he supposed. Besides, if he stressed his knee too bad now, he'd be aching all week, he knew it.

Emmanuel was... uh... Good looking... It was weird. Never had I ever been attracted to a man but... Uh. I took his hand to be polite... It felt weird. I heard once that just a touch of a hand and you could tell the difference between love and... I shook my head. No, I wasn't looking for love but... "Oh, okay. yeah looks painful... Nice to meet you Emanuel. Do you mind if I call you Manny. Emmanuel is kinda a mouthful... Yeah you could def come sit on my porch. I have some beers inside if you want one," I told him leading him to my porch offering my arm if he needed something to lean on.

He smirked and nodded in agreement. "Yeah, people call me that or Em," he agreed. To be honest, Emmanuel could probably have used the proffered arm, but his pride left him gritting his teeth instead as he limped over to the porch. He dropped down onto the steps, leg outstretched. Dante was gonna bitch him out for overdoing it, he just knew it.

Em was surprised by the overgenerous offer, but caught himself nodding. "That actually sounds really good, man. Thanks, I appreciate it." Leaning forward, he started unstrapping the brace around his knee. It was one of those fancy hinged ones, the kind his old physical therapist had recommended to him. Taking it off revealed a long, ragged white scar that ran along the side of his leg from just under his knee up under his running shorts. It was a deep scar, too, the wound obviously having taken out a considerable amount of muscle on that side. The healers had managed to restore a good amount of it - the muscles there had been nearly decimated - but even they hadn't been able to give him back everything.

I liked this guy he seemed nice. Not too uninviting. I ran inside quickly to get the beers not wanting to leave him waiting. Gosh, the back of his head was really... uh, nevermind. "That looks really painful." I said noticing the scar on his knee. All the sudden I had the urge to touch it. I restrained my self as always. I had to restrain myself a lot. It was become harder though. Everything was harder.

"Here you go," I said before tossing him the beer. After I had done that I opened my own can. "Looks like it's gonna rain. I don't really like rain I mean I used to but.... Well, if I get to know you better I'll tell you, but that story's kinda a downer..."

Taking the beer with a grateful nod and murmur of thanks, Emmanuel took a sip and sighed. "It's not so bad these days. Happened years ago during the war. And I can tell you for sure it's gonna rain. That's why it's acting up like this. Sucks, 'cause I'm a water fae. I'm supposed to love rain, but it just makes my leg ache now." He rubbed at the side of his leg with the heel of his hand.

Looking over at Houston, he offered a soft smile. This was nice, just sitting down and having a beer with someone. He'd been sort of shut-in for the past...well, the past while with no one to talk to but Dante at home and little kids at work. "I appreciate the neighborly hospitality," Em told him. I've been in town a while now. Only just got a house, though. I was renting one of those cubbyhole apartments in town. My brother and I just bought a place last month."

When Emmanuel told me he was a water fae my heart stopped. I hadn't encountered a water fae since... "My wife was a water fae... I held out my hand feeling the first drop of rain. I watched as one, two, three, drops fell hitting the pavement. Making it darker where the water fell.

I took another sip listening to Emmanuel. "It's totally fine, I like talking to people. It's been awhile since I've had neighbors. I just moved in too. I was offered a job at that school. Which is totally weird because I'm a human,"[/color I told him as I stood up to start moving away from the rain.
"You can come in if you want. If you're not feeling up to walking yet. Otherwise I can't offer you mode of transportation. I don't know if you have your phone if you don't you can use the." I felt a bit intrusive but I didn't want the man to have to walk back to his house if his knee was hurting that bad.

Wife. Whelp, apparently Houston was going to sit comfortably in the friendship and eye candy category - which was fine, really. Emmanuel wasn't really looking for a relationship right now. He had work, his brother to take care of, a new house to fix up...he was a busy guy!

"Oh wow, you don't meet many humans in this town. I take it you're into all this mess 'cause of your wife, then?"

[/b] He imagined it had to be straight up bizarre living in a place like Northvale when you were...well, normal.

Em stood up, testing out weight on his leg. He definitely didn't mind the rain, and now that the pressure valve essentially been released, the ache in his knee had lessened considerably. With a small wave of his hand, raindrops started gathering around the knee brace, offering extra cushioning to the sore joint. He shook his head. "Oh, no, I wouldn't want to trouble you any more. The rain is helping now that it's finally here."

Flashing Houston a winning grin, he took the few steps down off the porch in demonstration. "See? Good as new. Thanks for letting me chill here, though. I'll see you around?"
