Pandora was bored. Bored out of her mind. She had taken a walk outside because the weather was actually pleasant for a change. Placing the sunglasses over her eyes she just tried to think of something to do. She had training later, learning to control this shield of hers, so maybe she'd practice a little? It couldn't hurt anyone, could it? Well. It could. It could kill. It almost had. She shook her head. She'd be careful.
Sitting down on the grass, she tried to find her shield. Slowly, she began to focus. After five minutes she groaned. Nope. She still needed anger. Falling back, she lied down onto the grass. Well. She'd just lie here bored out of her mind then. She was in the mood to do some magic though. What was going on in her mind, she didn't know. All she wanted to do was become a better witch.
Continuing to stare at the sky, her sunglasses making it so it didn't kill her eyes, she dreamed of becoming a decent witch. Someone with power. The thought made her smile. God, she'd love to be powerful. Heck, she'd been turning up to all of her magic classes. Even potions - and that lesson just bored her. Man, she wanted to cure her boredom. "Somebody please, cure this boredom" she called out, groaning again.

So after getting into yet another fight with his brothers, it was perfectly understandable why Tobias wasn't all too keen to go to class-- it's not like he didn't already know everything, anyway, so what was the point? Anyway the day had started out much too poorly for him to even consider wandering into the Potions classroom and seeing Cain's ugly face. Most of the time, Tobias couldn't even figure out why he bothered to tolerate them.
Oh yeah, because they were his brothers, and family was family. Why he couldn't just switch them out for other people he'd never understand-- but okay. Whatever. Tobias could deal with his stupid family most of the time. It was just days like today that he really didn't want to.
He wandered out onto the front lawn, playing with his wand as usual and because he was in a charitable mood that day, creating little rainclouds to water the grass and flowers. Silent living things like plants were so much more agreeable than living things that made noise, like birds and such. He'd muted a couple of birds on his way to the front lawn already, just to stop their incessant chirping. Annoying little things.
And then Tobias noticed someone lying on the grass. Pandora, it seemed; he hadn't spoken with her in about an eon. Not bothering to even try and look friendly (because he knew Pan wouldn't care, anyway), he lay down next to her.
"What're you looking at? The clouds?" He sort-of smiled. What? It was a pretty day, and he had a pretty girl at his side who just happened not to be unbearable. "transfigurant: dracones, unicórnium, volucrum, florum," he whispered, pointing his wand at the sky. The clouds then morphed into dragons, unicorns, birds and flowers; they were quite beautiful, if you asked Tobias. And then he lay back, content to enjoy the clouds with a friend.

She was lost in her thoughts. So, lost, in fact, that when she felt someone lie next to her. She jumped and turned to glare at the person "What the fuck do you think you're-" she stopped when she saw the person. She relaxed instantly. Ah, it was only Toby. She didn't mind him coming to talk to her. Not that she should have been annoyed at anyone else. Wasn't she bored out of her mind? At his words she chuckled, once more looking at the clouds. "Yeah, something like that. So, how're you doing, Toby?" she asked.
Hearing latin words, she turned to Toby but then noticed something out of the corner of her eye. She looked up once more and.. wow. The clouds began to change into shapes. Dragons, unicorns, birds and flowers filled the sky. She grinned. "Not bad, Toby, not bad at all.." she told her friend. If she had the power, she'd have done her own tricks but everyone knew that Pan's transfiguration skills were lacking. She blamed it on the fact that her mother used to teach it - and their relationship was strained to say the least.
She smirked softly. Man. She'd have to stop skipping lessons but they were just so boring! Who wanted to hear a teacher drone on for an hour. It was much nicer to lie in the sun. "So, what lesson are you skipping then? I've got drama myself, and I've feeling far too lazy to be dramatic and think of insults for my Uncle" she normally loved drama but it was a nice day. She was going to enjoy it. No matter what anyone said.

As a cloud-dragon blew a bit of cloud-fire at a cloud-flower, causing the cloud-flower to dissipate, Tobias turned to Pan. "Skipping lessons? Me? Pandora, I'm shocked and horrified that you think I'd do such a thing!" he said, mock-horrified while the grin on his face probably gave him away. "But, ah, well, I guess you caught me and my skipping of classes cannot escape the all-knowing Pandora. It's Potions with Cain, which is why I can't be bothered to go; Potions is a waste of time, and Cain even more so." He snorted. Recently, his brother was being more annoying than ever, always finding fault in Tobias when there was hardly any (because even Tobias couldn't claim that there was none). It was like Cain and Connor were having a competition to see who could be more annoying to Tobias.
"... I hate my brothers sometimes," he muttered under his breath. He wasn't foolish enough to think that Pandora wouldn't be able to hear him, but since it was Pandora, he figured that he didn't really mind. "Which I suppose answers your first question, too." Pandora knew that Tobias was never all that happy when he was fighting with his siblings. Despite them not really getting along anymore, they were still siblings, and he still kind of loved them. 'Kind of' being the key words. "But let's not talk about that; how are you? Fine? Happy? Bored out of your mind?" He grinned at Pan, rolling on his side such that he was facing her properly (he didn't like to strain his neck, okay?). "I know I am. Everything's really boring nowadays and I can hardly stand it."

The witch was enjoying watching the little cloud show. Especially when dragons burnt the flowers. Now that was just epic. Epic beyond words. When Toby spoke, she laughed. Oh yes, because the man was such a geek. He always had to go to all the lessons. She rolled her eyes but he soon answered her question. She laughed. Potions. No wonder he was skipping. The lesson was a waste of time. She only turned up to stare at Cain, not that she would tell Toby that. She might just get a glare and then no company.
She turned to him. "Oh, potions, the most useless of lessons. Far too slow. Wanna kill a person, sure, brew these ingredients and wait a day..." she ranted a little but then smiled "All-knowing Pandora? Thanks. Haven't been called that before - though it does make me sound like one of those psychic frauds. Aha! Future career sorted!" She joked. Like she would ever be one of those people looking through crystal balls. No thank you.
At his words about hating his brothers, she chuckled softly. "I love the way the hatred only extends to the males" she spoke, knowing the reason. Toby was extremely competitive. Everyone knew it. "Speaking of siblings, how's Ellie?" she asked about the youngest Redferne. Pan had only.met Elodie a few times but every time she was greeted with 'Panda-beaarr!' and then a hug. That kid was adorable - and Pan knew that Toby loved his little sister.
She turned over when Toby did as he spoke. He was bored too? Well. At least she wasn't the only one. "Bored. Totally bored. And everything is boring nowadays. It seems the only fun people want to do is either get wasted or stoned - and it's far too early for that. Then no one shares my violent nature so they don't want a fight..." she let out a small groan. She really needed more friends that could duel with her. Wait. She remembered who she was next to. A soft smirk played on her face as she looked at Toby. "I lie.. I think I know someone".

"Wait a day? That I could handle, but not waiting a month or a year and why bother to gather all those stupid, unnecessary ingredients when you could just use your wand and swish and flick and ta-da, the guy's bleeding out of every orifice?" He grinned. He'd been training to do that spell for a couple of weeks now, trying his best to figure out the best Latin words and best wand movements for that combination. Northvale didn't teach such cruel and sadistic advanced spells but Tobias was particularly skilled at crafting his own spells, anyway. He certainly had the patience for it.
He'd have patience for anything that could help him improve. But then he was brought out of his thoughts by Pandora's joke about crystal balls and psychic frauds; ha. "Do those kinds of people even still exist?" he asked, thinking back to the short amount of time he'd spent in the world of humans. "Perhaps they do in the land of humans, certainly not in Northvale."
He snorted when Pan mentioned how the hatred only extended to the males. "Well, can you see me getting mad at Ellie?" He'd never get mad at his youngest sister. She was too adorable and he loved her too much, even to the extent that Asher always felt... well, unloved. But that was probaly also because Asher was a whiny little brat. "She's perfect, by the way, as usual. Adorable as ever and always asking for her Panda-bear again. You should come over some time to meet her; she'd love it." Sometimes Tobias felt like Pan was the sister that he'd never had. Being his first actual friend and everything, sometimes she was there for him when even Aria wasn't and it felt like she understood him much better, too. And since Ellie already loved her, she was pretty much already a part of the family in Tobias' eyes.
Then Pandora suggested a fight. Well, that would be interesting enough, even though Pan wasn't all that powerful. "A fight sounds like it would do wonderfully in chasing off any of the boredom I have left, but..." he trailed off, unsure of whether Pan really wished to spar with him. "You know how I get when I fight, right? It'll be really painful, and if you tell me to stop, I might not be able to stop in time." Unfortunately for him, Tobias' control issues had carried on into adulthood-- or at least teenagerhood-- and he'd very nearly killed Aria once, and many more times himself. "You sure you're up to it?" Never hurt to be sure, after all.

“Well, you have more patience than me Toby. I don’t think I could even wait a day to kill someone” she spoke and then her eyes widened as the sorcerer mentioned a spell. She grinned at him “Okay, you’ve got to teach me that! Holmes would love it!” she would have really loved to learn to do a spell like that. Of course, it might be slightly too advanced for her – it sounded like a curse and her forte was charms. Heck, she was actually pretty good at charms but she didn’t tell people. Then they’d expect her to do work.
As Toby spoke about the psychics that populated nearly every seaside town there was, she laughed. “Hey, I lived in the ‘land of humans’ for sixteen years. Not all of us are born into the sorcerer life. Northvale was my first real touch with the supernatural world. How sad is that? But seriously, I’ll take you to meet one of the human fakes one day. It’s amusing as fuck” she told him, actually rather liking that idea. Going into the mortal world and just having a laugh. She’d missed things like that. Maybe she’d try and get Toby to join her in going to the seaside one day. Market stalls selling junk, the arcade games, and, of course, a trip to a psychic.
Pandora knew just how much Toby loved little Elodie and she could see the love on his face when he spoke of her. At the mention of her going over and visiting, she was a little apprehensive. She liked all the Redferne’s, but being in the same place as all of them? It seemed quite daunting really, but, she couldn’t say no if it would please Elodie. Pandora was already growing to love the child. “Yeah, sure, that sounds awesome” she spoke, because, really, it did. Toby was almost a brother to her, which she found to be quite awesome. It was always good to have a Redferne on your side.
She could tell that Toby didn’t want to hurt her, but she was fine if she did get hurt. She knew all of the charms to heal herself, so it would be okay if he went a little extreme. She couldn’t help but think of how cute he was when he actually showed he cared. She grinned at him as she jumped up. “I know you’re scared you’ll be beaten by a girl, and not only that, but one that’s younger than you and has only had her powers for four years now... but its okay, Toby, I’ll go easy on you” she teased as she drew her wand from her boot.
She tossed her hair out of her face and took her sunglasses off, placing them in her bag that she tossed to the side. A smirk was on her face and she couldn’t wipe it off even how hard she tried. “Of course I’m sure, Toby. I don’t think you’d actually kill me, who would talk to you then?” she gave a laugh as she teased him further. Okay, this was getting really fun and the duel hadn’t even started.

Tobias grinned at Pandora's excitement to learn the spell. He had lovingly crafted that one, so it was pretty much his baby-- but if it was Pandora, he supposed it'd be fine. "Maybe I'll show it to you during our fight," he laughed, not actually intending on using that spell on her (Aria, maybe, but definitely not Pan-- she wouldn't be able to take it). "It's a curse, though, and Holmes isn't even a sorcerer. It's none of his business." Despite Tobias loving Pan like a sister, he didn't quite approve of her boyfriend. The fact that she was dating an ancient professor was bad enough, but the entire matter of his personality was an entirely different matter. Tobias never thought he'd find someone more grating in the world than Professor McKinney, but he soon learned that Professor Holmes and McKinney were on similar levels of annoyingness. He really couldn't see what Pan saw in him.
But it wasn't time for weird thoughts like that; if he wanted to keep the upper hand in the battle (as easy a battle as it might be), he had to stay focused. And more importantly, if he wanted to keep Pandora from suffering unnecessarily painful and possibly fatal injuries (he wouldn't want to cause the entire ceiling to fall down on her and almost kill her like he did to Aria the other time), he was definitely going to have to keep his focus. "Scared? Me? Ridiculous. You, on the other hand..." he grinned, getting off the ground in one swift motion. "I can practically see you quaking in your pretty boots."
And after the mandatory kind-of-trash-talking-but-not-quite, Tobias let his wand slide out from the holster that he kept in his right sleeve, and decided that he'd go for the offensive right away. "The first one to pass out, even if it's just for a few seconds, loses!" he called, then turned around and ran a little bit to put some distance between himself and Pan in preparation for his spell. "transfigurant: syrtis! vites folliculus, opprimere proni submergatur in syrtis!" he called out, and instantly, the ground under Pandora's feet transformed into quicksand. Vines seemed to appear out of nowhere and wrap themselves around Pan, and then forced her head under the quicksand and held her there tightly. It was also kind of to make sure that Tobias would be able to fish Pandora out if needed, but personally Tobias was pretty happy with his starting. He'd been wanting to try a few of his new outdoor spell combinations, anyway.

She chuckled softly as he said he would show it to her during the fight. Well, that would certainly be interesting but not really something that appealed to her. She listened further and could tell by his tone that her friend did not like the man she was dating. She understood that. He was an arse to most, he really was. “He just likes to know I can protect myself when needed, Toby” she spoke, but was still chuckling “and stop creating bloody curses! You know I suck!”. She crossed her arms in mock anger. She would really have to start practicing her curses more... but that meant going to lessons.
She watched as he got up, and he mentioned that she was scared. A sarcastic laugh left her lips. “Oh, sure, and I know, they are pretty boots aren’t they?” she loved her boots, she really did. But she wasn’t scared. Well, maybe just a fraction. This was Tobias Redferne. He was a pretty powerful sorcerer, probably the most powerful among the students. And she – Pandora Hearth – had decided to challenge him to a duel.
“I am too fucking reckless sometimes” she muttered to herself as Tobias got out his wand. Well, she wasn’t going to turn back now. That was even worse than any possible injury she could get out of the fight. Backing down would suggest she was weak and there was no way that was happening. Pandora was a strong person, and she did not like to damage her pride. Not one bit.
He told her the rules of the fight and she nodded. That sounded like a good idea – but it could also mean this duel could last a while. A brief image of them stuck her for days crossed her mind, and half the school probably watching. Now that would be hilarious. He got his distance and then spoke. Transfiguration. God, she hated it.
She felt herself being pulled down by quicksand and then vines pulled her under. She stopped breathing and was happy her wand was grasped in her hand. But the quicksand was all around her. She couldn’t speak, she couldn’t open her eyes. It would have to be a wordless spell. She tried to think of a spell, without panicking; her mind running through every possible Latin word. She’d have to repel the quicksand or... she would have smiled. Make the force the opposite.
Vi contrariae she thought and flicked her wand upwards slightly. And it worked. No longer was the quicksand sucking her down but it was pushing her upwards. She took in a breath as she broke free from the quicksand and spluttered slightly but was okay. “Secare vites” she slashed her wand and the vines all cut from her body. She stepped clear of the quicksand and narrowed her eyes at Toby.
She pointed her wand at the sky “creare tempestas” she called out and the black clouds instantly rolled in, thunder cracked across the sky as she created a storm. From the sky, she moved her wand to point at Toby calling “fulgur percusserit: Tobias” as she did so. The lightning that was forming listened to her call and moved in the sky, going to strike her friend. Yeah, it was a little harsh, but Pandora was enjoying this. She’d never duelled like this before; with someone that she knew would be able to protect themselves and wouldn’t hate her for doing harsher charms.

When Tobias heard Pandora cast creare tempestas, he already knew what she was going to do. "Really, Panny? fulgur percusserit? Of all the spells!" he called out, laughing. In theory, fulgur percusserit was a pretty good spell, but the fatal flaw about it was that it was about lightning. That made it painfully tricky, and easy to deflect. "declinavi coruscatio: Pandora! ligare pedes ad terram, non occidere." There. Instantly, Pandora's feet were melded to the ground and Tobias managed to deflect the lightning to Pan's direction. Then it was time for his proper counter-attack. Although Tobias wasn't going to use the extreme spells that he'd be comfortable with using on Aria (for example, the blood-burning spell or his crucifixion combination, as fond of the two as he might be), it didn't mean that he was going to make it easy for Pan to win.
"obturatio pluvia, ignis in circuitu Pandora! spicae a terram." As quickly as it had come, the sky cleared and the rain completely stopped. Not a moment after that, a ring of fire appeared around Pandora, surrounding her and rendering her unable to move. Then, numerous spikes started springing out from under her feet, despite her still being bound to the ground. Tobias grinned. The fight was fun, especially since he could see that Pandora wasn't holding back. In fact, her magic had improved since the last time he saw her fight. At least her charms were a lot better... was she getting help from Liam or Connor? Hn. Well, it didn't matter, anyway.
Privately, he wondered how Pandora was going to get herself out of this one. It was an interesting curse, definitely, and while Aria usually got out of it by doing boring crap like summoning water and stuff like that, Tobias was hoping that Pandora would think of something more... interesting. Aria never seemed to understand that spells used against her could be turned back and used as counter-attacks, but if Pandora figured that she could redirect the force of the quicksand to make herself rise up, Tobias was confident that Pan would be about to think of something. This was going to be even more fun than Tobias had previously thought-- and maybe he shouldn't go easy on her, after all.
And then as an afterthought, he added a "and just because you said that, I will keep creating 'bloody curses'! You should improve your hexes and curses! Charms aren't going to get you anywhere in a real fight-- you don't see me neglecting my curses/hexes in favour of my Transfiguration, do you?" Charms were handy in everyday life, but ultimately pretty useless in fights unless you had nothing else to depend on. For example, instead of having to redirect the force, Tobias would have just... well. Knowing Tobias, he'd have placed a protection spell on himself and then proceeded to bomb the entire place up, but that was just Tobias. Which didn't use a single charm, so ha. Charms were useless. Although not as useless as Potions, of course.
