Meeting up with Aaisha at the park made logistical sense, since she lived just east of it, andthe restaurant we were going to lie to the west. Still, being a single adult man sitting on a bench next to a playground full of kids kinda makes me feel like a creeper. You know, that irrational paranoia that all the moms and nannies think you're some kind of stranger danger pedo. So when I saw a familiar face - a student of mine that was apparently babysitting for the summer - I jumped at the opportunity, waving my arm wildly at her.
"Hey, Mary! What's up, kiddo?" I called. The girl came over, a toddler balanced on one hip and looking a bit haggard. She was a nice kid, Mary. Quiet, polite - absolute shit with live transformations, though.
She gave me a weak smile. "Hi, Mr. R. I'm alright, just doing some babysitting. This is Louisa." She nodded at the drooling blonde bundle in her arms. She glanced, sort of nervously, toward the coffee shop across the street. "Actually, ummm...could I ask a big favor?"
I raised an eyebrow in surprise. I didn't know the kid that well, but I nodded. "Site, ask away."
The girl flushed and explained quietly, "I've had too pee for, like, an hour. Could you hold on to her while I run across the street? I'm dying here."
I chuckled at her embarrassment and nodded quickly, holding my arms out to take the baby. "No problem. Go ahead."
With a look of utmost relief, Mary handed off the baby and sprinted out of the park. I sat the little one on my knee and looked at her. She was maybe a year old, sucking on her fist, leaving drool down her chin and arm. I bounced my leg a little, earning a laugh. "Hey, sweetie pie. That hand must be pretty tasty, eh?" She had these gorgeous big green eyes that were just staring up at me like I was the most fascinating thing she'd ever seen. Suddenly, with a look of strong determination, Louisa reached for the front of my shirt with both hands, hauling herself against my chest so she was standing on my thighs, face right up in mine. I kinda love that about kids, how they have no concept of personal space or social acceptability. Nope, they just do whatever they damn well please.
Apparently, Louisa had decided the sunglasses sitting on top of my head were the new top priority. She grabbed at them, pulling at a good hunk of my hair in the process. "Hey!" I laughed. "You're gonna mess up the hairdo, hun."
I sat her back down on my lap and put the glasses on her little face. They were huge on her.I pulled out my wand and tapped the side of my glasses, murmured, "Minimus." They shrank down until they fit a bit better. "Hey, now you look like a real cool dude," I told her.
