It sucked, losing. Really, really sucked. Even after getting hammered the night before, and enjoying the massive hangover, and having the school nurse fix up both the burns and the headache, it still sucked. Not to mention that his first magic involved luck, Andrew was absolutely the “sore loser” type. And this sealed the deal, to be sure.
So, the next morning that he decided to not skip class, Andrew went up to his Charms teacher, Mr. Redferne. One of the many Redfernes, so really, Connor. He wouldn't be the only person to call him that, if he dared. But after getting the crap kicked out of him, Andrew wasn't very willing to insult any teacher. Mr. Redferne it was.
“Mr. Redferne? Hey, um. I was wondering...” Of all his teachers, Connor was the least-petrifying teacher to Andrew, as Charms was the only class he always attended, and paid perfect attention to. So the request wasn't too much of a stretch. “Could you maybe give me some extra lessons? I really love Charms, and you're a cool teacher, so...” he let the man figure out the rest of the sentence on his own.

Connor was pretty sure he didn't know how much working teaching actually took. He kind of thought he could show up to classes and show them a fancy charm, have them attempt it, try not to laugh when they fail miserably, repeat. Yeah... well within the first week or so, the class wanted to know if that was all they were going to do. If they were going to have homework... Connor didn't prepare for this!
Either way. Here he was, sitting at his desk and daydreaming about a book he had currently read and fell in love with when a voice interrupted him. He blinked a few times, trying to remember where he was and what was going on before figuring it out. "W-what?" Connor stuttered out and then caught himself. "Oh. Sorry. Yeah... sure. I guess I don't see the harm in that."

He was cool, then, agreeing for the extra lessons. After all, Andrew didn't exactly deserve it, considering the way he acted towards teachers in general. Really, the guy was looking to be an angel at this point to him. Or, at least a saint.
If he were cool, Connor also came off as a bit odd. Not really teacher-material, but more like your best nerd friend that you picked on publicly but liked having cool conversations with at the end of the day, and quietly respected. I mean, book in hand and everything... Not that Andrew had anything against books, or nerds for that matter, but he was just more of the physical type.
Andrew hoisted his bag off his shoulder and onto a nearby desk, relieving himself of the weight. "Sweet! ...um, this is kinda pathetic, but can we start with the basics? I just got thrown into 5th year," he laughed, a bit sheepishly.

The basics? What... exactly were the basics. Uhm. Connor tried to search his memory for his first account of learning magic. He was teaching the first years sure... but he was totally bsing it. Like he did with a lot of things. "Uh. Well. Basics are different for everyone. My basics were learning Latin. Which I think any sorcerer should do, but it might take you awhile..." Connor was fairly certain he learned most Latin within like 6 months. His parents had drilled him.
How about you tell me what you want to learn, and I'll teach you?" Connor asked him hopefully. Connor made spells up when he wanted to perform something. He didn't have an amazing memory for them or anything. He literally just made them up. It was easier that way.

Hah. Asking the laziest student in the school what he wants to learn? That's going to go places. Andrew had no idea how to answer that. "Um. I have zip experience. So, what I want to learn?"
This was not going to go anywhere, was it? Connor didn't seem to be the usual, from-the-book teacher by any means, and Andrew didn't have the patience to learn another language. If he really wanted to, he could, but it wasn't important to him. So, what was important to him?
Of course. Carter.
"Are there any seeking spells? Or good fighting spells? That's what I need," he decided.

Zip experience and he wanted Connor to teach him how to be a fighter, it seemed. That was kind of harder to do than it was to say. Connor knew a lot of different fighting spells, of course. He knew the ones to make people hurt, to make them cry, and to make them wish they had never been born. He was raised with spells that Andrew could only dream about. "Like I said. I don't exactly do spell by spell, I speak fluent latin and go off of that. But I guess I can just teach you my favorite spells? I like the fulling lungs with water spell. Tobias's favorite is the blood boiling curse."

Andrew shrugged. Connor was the teacher, not him. He trusted the man to teach him the right spells for fighting, since he had no clue what they did. Blood boiling? Sounded complicated. But if it could help him in the Save Carter Expedition of his life, it was worth trying. "Sounds good to me," he replied casually. But really, he was interested. Magic was crazy. Real. Intense. All those sorts of things. And seeing it face to face was a bit exhilarating. Like a Harry Potter movie come to life in his bedroom. Well, it was exhilarating when it was more that just the dumb "tying your shoes" spells that they talked about in class. There was a reason he never paid much attention in class: crap was boring.
"So, um, how do I start? Do I, uh, learn the magic words?" Yeah, he sounded like a stupid dork. But what could he do? He didn't pay attention to know more than sorcerers said Latin stuff and things happened.
