One of the best things about Tobias leaving Northvale was that he could now pick Elodie up from elementary school. He knew that Liam did it most of the time, ensuring that none of his classes clashed with when he had to pick Elodie up and when they did, sending another of their siblings in his place, but he really missed being able to just spend one entire afternoon with his baby sister. Now that he didn't have any troublesome classes to get in his way, he could do whatever he wanted -- and today it just happened that what he wanted was to pick up Elodie from elementary school, bring her to get some ice cream, and them take her shopping for anything she wanted. During his stint in France, Tobias managed to get a few things-- one of them being a job. It wasn't anything particularly glamourous or whatever, but he'd set up a small business helping others translate Latin texts (for a cost) and setting up wards (priced according to how powerful the ward had to be. Once he had to set up a ward against this troublesome, potentially violent vampire ex-boyfriend, and the client had wanted the vampire teleported to a very specific place whenever he got within 50 kilometers of her knowingly. Obviously this had cost quite a lot). Although he closed it down when he returned to Northvale, Tobias did have quite a lot of money and was prepared to use it as necessary to make it up to his baby sister for leaving.
Still, though, Tobias didn't even know for sure how Elodie had felt about him leaving. Heck, he didn't even know what his siblings told her-- they could have very well neglected to tell her everything, although missing his weekly visits would probably have made Elodie notice something (she was young, but she wasn't an idiot, not like Cain, who was old and an idiot)-- and he didn't want Elodie to think that he just abandoned her or something, although Tobias was pretty sure that Elodie knew perfectly well that he'd never abandon her. He loved her far too much for that.
Leaning against the fence surrounding the elementary school, Tobias glanced at his watch, wondering how much longer it would take for his little sister to be released-- 15 more minutes. Maybe coming 20 minutes early was a bad idea, but Tobias couldn't be blamed for wanting to see his baby sister and he'd always been a bad judge of time, anyway. Ah well, he supposed he had no choice but to loiter around the elementary school suspiciously like some pedophile or something, but it was worth it. An afternoon with his baby sister would be awesome and just what he needed to get his mind of stupid crap like his brothers or his need to get a job soon or what happened in France. And hey, maybe he'd be lucky and Elodie would be let out early.
14 more minutes.

Elodie’s eyes flicked up to the clock in the room. She thought for a moment. The big hand was on the two. That meant.. ten minutes past. Then she looked at the little hand. It was in between the three and the four. That meant the hour was three. So, ten past three. A soft frown settled on her lips. She still had to wait another twenty minutes before school was over.
Normally Elodie loved school. The longer she spent here, the longer she could learn, but today she just wanted to be out already. So, she focused once again on the picture she was drawing and hoped that the phrase ‘time flies when you’re having fun’ applied. The picture, like many of children her age, was of her family. Though, there was now an addition to the picture. Like a woman with long, pale hair next to Liam. Her bottom lip was snagged in between her teeth as she concentrated on her drawing. Trying to perfect her family. When she had finally finished the picture, and running out of black colouring pencil (why did all of her family seem to wear a lot of black?) she beamed down at it.
A bell signalled the end of the day. Her grin widening, if that was even possible, her hand took her drawing and she grabbed her school bag from the hook. She said goodbye to Mr Parsons and almost ran out of the classroom, her eyes looked around for Liam as she entered the playground full of parents waiting for their children. But, no Liam could she see. He was never late. Never. So, where was her brother?
A delighted scream left her lips. Her eyes landed on her brother, but it wasn’t Liam, instead the brother that had been on his little adventure for the past few weeks. Tobias. The young child instantly was running up to him and when she finally reached him she hugged him. The picture in her hand forgotten. Tobias was here to pick her up. Her Toby. “Toby! I’ve missed you! Did you have fun on your adventure?” she asked her brother as she finally released him from the death-grip of a hug. She’d missed him, okay?
Her siblings had told her that Tobias had left - of course they did. She’d noticed his absence extremely quickly. Tobias was her joint favourite brother. It was probably well known in the family too. Although she loved all of her siblings, even Cain (who seemed to love Asher more than he did her), she really did love Liam and Tobias the most out of her brothers. For different reasons. Everything that Liam wasn’t, Tobias was, and vice versa. And right now? Being with her ‘fun brother’ seemed a lot more appealing. The grin on her features was probably a prime give-away that Elodie was very much in the mood to go and have fun. School was finished for the weekend. That meant that they should celebrate.
The youngest Redferne looked up to her brother “we don’t have to go home, do we? Can we go off and do something fun?” she asked, knowing full well that her brother would. So, she might have abused the power she had over her siblings sometimes. She knew they’d always give her everything and anything she wanted, within reason, so she did take advantage of that. Of course she did. And now she was going to make sure Toby didn’t take her home. Home was boring and it was a really pretty day. They deserved to enjoy such good weather.

Okay, so if he switched the red candy with the blue one...
Swiftly exchanging the places of the various types of brightly-coloured candy on Candy Crush seemed to have become Tobias' new favourite pasttime when he was waiting impatiently for something to happen. It was only a temporary measure, of course, and the only reason why he resorted to it was because Pandora was in the hospital and couldn't text with her stupid arm. Otherwise he'd be texting her instead of just playing some stupid game. He did have a life that involved far more interesting things than playing Candy Crush. He didn't even like playing the stupid and over-colourful game, he just wanted to beat Cain in it and pass the level that Cain was stuck at--
All of a sudden, Tobias found himself being tackled by a six-year old ball of squee. Had it been 20 minutes already? Looking down at his legs, he saw that yes, it'd been 20 minutes already, and his darling baby sister was out-- and very excited to see him, it seemed. With a delighted smile, Tobias lifted his sister up and hugged her tightly.
"Now, what do we have here?" he teased, tweaking his little sister's adorable little nose. "Is it a little princess I have in my arms? Hm, I think I'll just have to kidnap you and bring you far, far away." Because Elodie was totally his little princess, with her cute little smiles and dresses and her general adorableness. She was a darling, which was a reason why Tobias loved her so much, and she was so innocent. Unlike Asher, for instance, who just spent all day sulking and not sticking up for himself. Sometimes thought that even Elodie was more likely to defend herself if she was being bulled than Asher.
The smile not leaving his face, Tobias placed Elodie gently down on the ground and straightened the ruffles in her dress. His sister was so precious, honestly, and she was even wearing one of the dresses he'd bought her. His smile did falter, however, when she mentioned his 'adventure'-- which he really didn't want to think about-- but he quickly ruffled her hair and gave her a smile. "I missed you too, my little angel. And yeah, I had tons of fun on my adventure! D'you wanna know what I did?" he asked her. Taking Elodie's small hand in his, Tobias started dragging her leading her towards their favourite ice-cream place. "And, well, I guess we can go out... on one condition, though!" he told her, laughing. "We have to get ice-cream first, unless you want your big brother to melt."

A light giggle left her lips as her brother lifted her up and started to speak. She batted his hand a little as he tweaked her nose, not that she really cared that much. The giggle turned into a laugh as he spoke further. “You can try but you will fail, I’m better than you!” she told him, grinning. Though, the young girl probably wouldn’t mind too much if her older brother did take her away from Northvale. Although she’d miss her siblings terribly - an adventure with her Toby seemed like a fairytale.
Seeing her brother smiling like this just further proved the change she had upon her siblings. The main reason Elodie acted like she did - it made them all happy. Unlike Asher who spent his whole time reading. That was boring. She was the fun little sister that strove to put a smile on each of her siblings faces (except Asher because that was an impossible task). Elodie’s innocent nature and the smile always found on her face would never really change. Not as long as it made her brothers and sister smile.
She was placed back on the ground, and her brother straightened her dress. It was one of the ones that he had brought for her. In fact, when he had left, every dress she had worn had been brought by her brother. She’d missed him.
The young child did notice the slight change in her brother as she mentioned his adventure. What had happened? She hoped no one had caused her Toby pain - because she would not be happy. No. However, he was soon back to his smiling old self. So, she didn’t mention the slight change in mood that had happened moments previous. And when he began to speak again, the young child forgot that his smile had faltered altogether. “Just as long as it’s a story on all the presents you’ve brought me!” she told her brother in answer to his question.
Toby always gave her the best presents. Whether it be dresses, like the one she wore today, or story books, artsy things.. the child loved them. His little adventure only really meant one thing in the youngest Redferne’s mind and that was the fact that he would have gotten her presents because he loved her just that much. She was better than his other siblings. She knew it.
He took his hand and she skipped along beside him. She kind of needed to; her short little legs needed that added boost to keep alongside her brother’s long strides. His words only made her grin. They could go out! Yay! But, there was a condition. She looked up at Toby, the smallest of frowns on her features. She hoped it wasn’t a bad condition. The frown didn’t last. In an instant she was grinning once again - ice cream sounded simply wonderful.
Tapping her chin with her finger on her free hand, she pretended to ponder the condition. Even though she already knew her answer. And she certainly didn’t want her big brother to melt. Who’d take her out for ice-cream then? “I guess we can get ice-cream, but only because I don’t want you to melt-” she told him “-and I love ice-cream”. How glad she was that it was Toby that had picked her up today. She already knew that the afternoon was going to be absolutely wonderful.

Upon hearing Elodie's exclamation that Tobias would fail because she was better, Tobias knelt down beside his baby sister such that he was at her eye level. Putting on his 'serious face', Tobias began to pretend that he was offended.
"I would fail? You're better?" Tobias said in mock-affront. "Why, princess, you have insulted my honour. I demand that we duel to see who exactly is better!" Using one arm to hold his baby sister in place and prevent her from squirming out of his reach, Tobias used his free hand to tickle the little girl. "Little imp, I'll show you who's better!" By this time, Tobias' serious expression had already morphed into an expression of childish glee. Spending time with Elodie never failed to make him feel free once again. Spending time with Elodie was like spending time with someone who already knew all about you but would never, ever judge, ever. It was almost better than spending time with Pandora in a sense-- not that Tobias didn't love Pandora, because she was practically his twin sister (despite being one year younger than him), but Tobias and Pandora had a more grown-up relationship than the wonderful adoring-big-brother-and-adorable-baby-sister relationship he shared with Elodie.
Grinning, Tobias ceased the tickle-attack on his little sister and lifted her, planning on piggybacking her all the way to the ice-cream shop (it wasn't like she was heavy, anyway, and Tobias was totally strong enough). Then Elodie mentioned the presents that he got her from France, making him think back to the three giant bags of gifts that he bought for her-- gosh. There were enough clothes in there to last her a year (including her growth rate, because Tobias calculated that, too), plus tons of toys and other similiar things. And as a late birthday present for his sister, Tobias already had a small book of easy-to-learn Latin that he made himself for Elodie. It would be perfect for her if she were to start learning Latin, Tobias knew, and it was easy enough to understand such that she'd be able to study it alone if she so wished. Despite feeling a hint of guilt for not having had ever done something like that for Asher, Tobias quickly dismissed the feeling. After all, Asher had Cain, and obviously Cain was the only brother that Asher truly wanted to have. All the other Redfernes probably seemed like extras to the boy.
"The presents I got you? Oh, dear," he left off, still grinning (but it was perfectly fine, since Elodie couldn't see his face anyway). "I'm afraid I forgot to get you anything from France, princess, so there'll be no stories about that; how about another story? I could tell you the story of your brave big brother and how he slayed a dragon, or defeated a thousand and one evil monsters who wanted to attack and steal the beautiful princess Elodie." As he said all of this, he wordlessly and wandlessly conjured little sparkly particles to form different shapes before the both of them, the particles forming the shape of a brave knight, a dragon, countless vaguely monster-shaped things and an adorable princess, all at the appropriate places. "And maybe, just maybe, if you're really attentive and don't interrupt, I could tell you about how I saved the princess, and the dragon gave me all his treasure in the end, which I think I'll be giving to the beautiful princess Elodie afterwards. How's that sound?"
They turned left, and there the ice-cream shop was. "Well, it's a good thing that you don't want your big brother to melt," Tobias told Elodie, kneeling down so that she could get off. Although piggybacking was a good way to transport fussy little 6-year olds around, it was hardly conducive for ice-cream flavour-picking. "I think because of your consideration for others, I'll let you have... two scoops today instead of your usual one scoop! So go ahead, pick two flavours." Tobias then lifted Elodie up and let her stand on the counter so that she would be able to better view the different flavours available-- it was a good thing that the ice-cream shop was designed to let little kids stand on the counter. And it was also a really good thing that Tobias had brought a ton of money out today, because knowing the both of them, they wouldn't be satisfied until they bought out the entire street.

Elodie watched as her big brother knelt down beside her so that his eyes were level with hers. She tried to stop the smirk that was breaking onto her face as he spoke. That look on his face was making her giggle, the fact he appeared to be offended by her words. She clapped her hands together as he said they should duel, about to nod and agree, but then his arm went around her. He was holding her in place and at his words she screamed as laughs began to erupt from her lips.
His free hand began to tickle her and she squirmed but it was to no avail. She couldn’t escape from the tickle attack. She kept on laughing, getting short of breath and she started to double over from the laughter leaving her. “T-T-Toby!” she called out in between the fits of giggles that escaped her “S-Stop! You w-win!” she couldn’t take any more of the tickling. When he finally stopped, a grin on his face, she frowned at him. “You’re a meanie-bum” she told him as she tried to catch her breath.
But the annoyance in her brother was short lived. He picked her up for a piggy-back the whole way there and that just seemed awesome. She hung onto him, her head resting on his shoulder as she continued to look around. So, this is what Toby saw when he looked around. You could see so much further! She couldn’t wait until she was all grown up.
As they walked, Toby told her that he hadn’t got her any presents. The young girl’s face fell. But.. Toby always got her presents. She was his favourite sister in the world. He couldn’t have forgotten her like that. Her eyes watched the pictures her brother created in the air but there was no glee anymore. Her brother had forgotten her. The young girl was actually sad, and rather irritated, that she hadn’t gotten any presents.
But then at more of the words, and upon hearing about treasure for her she grinned. “So you did get me something!” she told him, giggling “but that sounds great! Tell me the story! I want to hear how the knight slayed the dragon”. Elodie would always see her brother as a knight. He was strong, and brave, and he loved her dearly. All of her brothers were knights in her eyes really, except Asher of course, and even Aria was some kind of warrior Princess - like in Mulan! They were Redferne’s, and they were strong and brave and just awesome. And one day, she’d grow up and she would be just as great as all her siblings. Maybe, hopefully, even better.
She laughed as he spoke when they finally got to the ice-cream parlour. He knelt down and she gently hopped off of his back. How glad she was that her brother had brought her here. What a great way to start their little task of going around and having all the fun they could. Her eyes widened as her brother let her have two scoops of ice-cream. That was just amazing! She hugged her brother’s legs tightly before he lifted her up so she could pick her flavours. Now. This would be the hard task. There were just so many flavours! She could have eaten them all!
Her eyes scanned across the ice-cream. There were just too many flavours! Finally, she settled on the two flavours. After what seemed like an eternity to the young child (though it was probably only a couple of minutes). “Uhm, I think I’ll have the double chocolate and.. and.. cookie dough!” she said, once more looking to her brother, a wide grin on her face.

Tobias wrinkled his nose at Elodie before tweaking hers when she declared that he was a "meanie-bum". He wasn't a meanie-bum! In fact, if you asked Tobias, he was the furthest thing from a meanie-bum ever, unlike Cain, who was a complete meanie-bum 90% of the time. And great, he was sounding like a 6-year old. Gosh. "I'm not a meanie-bum, you little imp," he told her. "I'm your knight in shining armour, remember? If I'm a meanie-bum, I can't be the knight anymore. Or did you forget that?"
Laughing at Elodie's sudden interest in the story now that she knew that she was getting presents, Tobias started the particle slideshow-thing again and let it play out like a little movie in front of her. "Hmmm, okay then. So once upon a time, there lived a brave knight. He was in France, which, as you know, is a dangerous and scary country." Pausing in his story, Tobias turned to the ice-cream shopkeeper and told ordered Elodie's ice-cream along with a chocolate chip and cookie dough ice-cream for himself. Then, he led his sister to the tables that they had in the shop, lifting her up and placing her at one of the high tables. Then, he took a seat opposite her as they waited for their ice-cream to be served. "Which is why you should never go to France, or at least not without one of your older siblings taking you, okay? And because the brave knight was well-known for his power, many people far and wide came to him, asking for his help." Not untrue, because the Redfernes (especially Tobias, who had been posted to France during the war) had a reputation and when word travelled that Tobias Redferne was back in France, many people looked to him to solve their problems.
"Now, the brave knight managed to help most of these people without difficulty, but one day, the knight's old friend and ex-comrade came to him, asking him to assist him with a very special problem of his." Tobias still remembered Cassidy's face as he begged Tobias to help him with the gang problem that was rife in that area. Normally, Tobias wouldn't have bothered to help, but Cassidy was a loyal friend and although he had found it pretty hilarious that someone like Cassidy was unable to deal with a few ruffians, he agreed to help. "The problem, while being too complicated to go in-depth on, was about a few young dragonlings and how they were terrorising the town that the knight's ex-comrade lived in. Being a valiant and brave knight, the knight agreed to take a look and see what he could do."
However, Tobias stopped when he noticed Elodie go quiet. Was she not paying attention to the story-- was there something else more interesting in the shop? Was he a horrible storyteller? Or was it just Tobias' own imagination? Regardless, Tobias waved his hand in front of her face, trying to get her attention. "Helloooo, little imp, anybody home?"
