There was something about her wolf form that just seemed more.. appealing. If you were walking down a corridor in your human form, they could see your face. They could see who you are. But in wolf form? You could hide. People - especially the other races - were likely to see you as 'just another wolf' or, in the case of many vampires, 'just another dog'. Not that Jayce minded the racial insults. Just as long as they didn't bother her.
She was trotting down, weaving between the legs of different people. Dodging out the way of groups of friends. Trying to get herself out of the corridors. All of these people surrounding her, she didn’t like it. Yes, the young wolf might have been able to handle it, especially since she was in her wolf form, but she didn’t like it. All of these people. She just wanted to be outside. She wanted to be free.
And then she saw it: a door, light streaming through it and into the corridor. It was a beacon to the young wolf, calling her into the beautiful world outside. She listened to its call; darting past another person and her pads touching that wonderful grass. It was a relatively nice day. The sun instantly finding her dark fur and warming in. A soft breeze just ruffling it slightly. Her nose went up, smelling the fresh air. This was freedom. She moved at a trot once again, across the grass, her legs taking her toward the forest. A place less open and a place where she could hide from the rest of the student body.
As soon as she was under the cover of the trees, she felt better. Well, as better as she could feel. It was in the forest where she felt most at home now. It had been her home for the past two months – before she came to the academy. It was still her home now. Even though she had a dorm, many nights were spent in the forest. The wolf just curled up under a tree. Tears falling onto the muddy ground. She still cried for him. Every night. There was nothing she could do that would stop the tears from falling. Theron was dead. It was her fault.
Every single day she wished she hadn’t turned around. Just ran, again, when she felt her mother’s claws scratch her back. But no. She’d fought. She’d had enough of her mother’s abuse. The wolf that was once a war hero had turned crazy. Nearly everyone upon hearing the name of the Jett pack thought of Filomene Jett. The fact that she had become insane during the wars. No one knew that she had two children after that. One of them her. The other? Theron Jett. Her older brother. Her insanity had caused her jaws to sink into his neck. Killing her own son. And then Jayce had ran – it took two months before she came here. To Northvale. For freedom.
The wolf reached the springs. The water was running fresh and clean. Her muzzle dipped in, taking a drink, before she finally took a few steps back. She shifted. Her human form standing in the forest. On her own. The girl was still wary of everything around her, not liking the fact that her senses had now dulled. She couldn’t hear the squirrel in the tree fifteen metres away. She could no longer smell that very faint sorcerer smell. It had been there, but whether it had been from a sorcerer now, far away, or was an old sense she was unsure.
Sitting down, she drew her knees to her chest and wrapped her arms around her legs. Her head resting on her knees. At least it was tranquil here. A place she could just sit and try and clear her mind. She couldn’t possibly stay in the school, with all of those people, it was making her feel claustrophobic. She just needed to be free.

Somehow, Tobias found himself in Northvale Springs, hanging around like some suspicious lurker dude who would soon get the cops called on him. But it was hardly his fault that he missed Northvale, and it was certainly not his fault that while he'd still been a student, very much of his time had been spent in Vale Springs. More than most other places, in fact, since it used to be where he practised all his new spells. Letting his hands gently brush the leaves of the bushes and the barks of the trees as he walked past, he felt the scars on the tree trunks that had been the result of a couple of his more... violent curses. They were beautiful and useful curses, of course, but these imperfections (that had been made by Tobias himself) made Vale Springs feel more familiar to him than any place in a long time.
The dorms hardly gave much space for personalisation, but the Vale Springs... were really nice. Actually entering the Springs, Tobias found himself face-to-face with... some crying girl?
Damnit. Wondering if the girl had noticed him, Tobias contemplated leaving Vale Springs. He didn't have to lurk in Vale Springs, after all; he could always... go lurk in Panny's hospital room or something. It was just that after that talk he had with Locke, he kind of wanted to escape for a little while. And Vale Springs had proven in the past to be a wonderful place for Tobias to clear his head. Vale Springs, Tobias had long since decided, was the ultimate place of denial. One could just go there and immediately all their problems would vanish until they left. And, well, if this... weird crying girl... was a fellow user of the magic Vale Springs denial power, Tobias figured he owed it to her or something (as a more experienced user of the Vale Springs denial power) to let her vent to him.
Cautiously, Tobias approached her, ready to bolt at the first sign of hostility/her not wanting him there. But when he didn't notice any signs of her wanting to chase him away, he sat down beside her on the floor.
"So, what's wrong with you?" Tobias asked, then cringed at the horrible phrasing. While he did believe that no one who didn't have anything wrong with them would be sitting on the leaf-covered floor in Vale Springs crying, Tobias... probably shouldn't have said that. "Sorry. What's bothering you? Need to talk to someone about it?"
God, Tobias was obviously horrible at being even remotely comforting. Even his tone sounded fake to him. Maybe in the future he would know better and let other people do the comforting instead.

She heard him before she smelt him. Her head instantly snapping up at the sound of his feet against the ground. She sniffed. Sorcerer. The same sorcerer that she had smelt earlier. Instantly she began to regret coming down to the springs. She was wary instantly. The few tears that had fallen for Theron instantly dried up. Never would she cry in front of a person. Never. Then they asked questions. And she really didn't want to tell random strangers about her shit past. Then she got pity. Then they talked to 'poor little Jayce'. She didn't want that either. She just liked being left alone.
But then the male sat by her. Instantly her body tensed. She looked round and at him. His scent told her sorcerer and at his words she once more looked to the water. That was rude. But, she noticed the cringe. Maybe he hadn't meant it to be as rude as it sounded. When he rephrased his words her thoughts were shown to be true. Was something bothering her? Well, yes. She was still haunted by those memories from two months back. Did she want to talk about it? No. Not really.
Though, her brother had brought her up to be polite. So. She'd talk. She turned her head, her eyes focusing on him again "I'm f-fine. I'll live" she cringed herself at that. She'll live. "I don't s-see why I should b-bother you with m-my problems. Thank you, though." That was polite enough, wasn't it? Well. She thought so.
But now she knew she'd have to talk more. And that thought was just terrifying. But. She had to suck it up. The girl took a few breaths. Then she tried to think of something to say? How did people normally start conversations with people they didn't know? Ah. They introduced themselves. "My name's Jayce Jett. I'm a third year werewolf here" she told the man. Well. She was midly proud of herself for managing to actually talk to this man. Something about him just seemed quite.. dangerous? She wasn't sure what it was but she was wary. Her guard was still up and she wasn't going to relax anytime soon.
Her instincts were telling her that this man, though nice as he seemed, was a man to be wary of. She hoped that she would find out more about him soon. So she could know who he was and if she recognized his name. Of course, the wolf felt bad that she'd instantly jumped to the conclusiom that he was dangerous but she couldn't help it. Her instincts told her that and she would listen to them. Always.

Hn, well, if this girl didn't actually want to talk about her problems, Tobias wasn't going to object. Although he wasn't exactly too interested in what she had to say about, say, life in Northvale and how she was coping-- how mundane-- he wasn't going to just blow her off or anything. Maybe if he was lucky, she'd turn out to be one of those unbearably shy people who would just hide in a hole rather than talk to him.
Then again, that would make for a boring conversation. Since this girl was probably his last chance at entertainment for the day (and she was the only chance that he wouldn't get sucked back into bad memories yet again), Tobias managed a half-smile and decided to introduce herself to the girl. Maybe she'd trust him more if he responded; it really did seem like she was uncomfortable around him. Of course, if she knew of his reputation, this probably wasn't an unwarranted reaction, but it seemed like she didn't even know who he was! Then again, she was a werewolf-- Tobias remembered the war and how some of the werewolves were able to scent the power level of their foes. That had been really freaking troublesome and annoying. Maybe she was like some of them, although Tobias had never been very clear of the power level required to be able to do that. In fact, that was probably what caused him to lose most of the fights that he lost when in the war-- he never actually bothered to research properly the skills of the other races. It seemed a bit stupid, but at any rate, Tobias was from the "let's smash these guys' heads in!" half of the soldiers instead of the "let's learn the weaknesses of them and use it against them!" half. It was waaay too much trouble, anyway.
"Mm. Nice to meet you, Jayce-- I'm Tobias Redferne. I don't go to Northvale anymore, but before I dropped out, I used to hang around here a lot." Maybe that wasn't the best introduction, but whatever. "I know I have a reputation, but I won't hex you unless you do something to me first. Pinky promise."
Tobias thought he recognised the name "Jett" from the war, but he wasn't too clear, anyway. The only powerful creatures that he actually remembered were from the main families, and even if-- well, Jett, although it probably wasn't her and was, like, one of her parents or relatives or something who fought in the war-- had been an outstanding fighter that bashed Tobias' face in or something, it didn't really matter. Plus, he knew from experience that people directly affected by war didn't actually like to revisit it all that much. So he wisely kept his mouth shut about her name, and hoped that she would do the same for him. They didn't need to bond over how their war-torn histories had screwed them over. And at any rate, Tobias wasn't in the mood.

So, she was right to think he was powerful and to be wary. Tobias Redferne. She'd heard of him. Who hadn't? Jayce was on edge. Ready to shift at any moment if she was put in danger. This man could hurt her with a few words. Although, she felt that he would not. He did not seem like the, pardon the term, dick everyone said he was. But reputations always had truth to back them. Maybe Jayce was just lucky? She had managed to catch the infamous Tobias Redferne on a good day.
She listened to his words. He'd dropped out? Oh. And this place had been his hang-out? How interesting. The tiniest of smiles found its way onto her face at his following words. Yes, he did have a reputation. She also wouldn't do anything to hurt him unless he did something to hurt her. Jayce was not one for unecessary violence. She never would be. But, back to the man beside her. She supposed she should talk back. "It's nice to meet you too, Tobias. I m-met your brother - J-Jonah that is - the other day. I p-pray you're as n-nice as he was" she forced a small smile onto her face.
Jonah had been nice to her. As the first person she'd spoken to in the Academy it had eased her fear of the place slightly. Part of her had been worried that everyone would be cruel. But Jonah had been kind. They'd also be in the same history class. Well. At least she'd know one friendly face in the new class. And he was a Redferne. A powerful name. Ah, yes, Tobias had 'pinky promised' not to hex her. "I'm glad. And yes, you do have a slight reputation" she told him.
Did she just joke slightly? That surprised the wolf. It wasn't often that she joked. In fact, she couldn't remember the last time she joked. It must be the springs and the forest. It calmed her out here. She could relax more. "Oh, and don't worry. I won't do anything to hurt you either. Pinky promise" so she was finally relaxing. No longer was she ready to immediately shift if anything happened.
In a weird way, she felt like she could trust him right now. She didn't know whether it was because he was Jonah's brother and he'd been nice to her, or that it was because he was being relatively nice. He had 'pinky promised' not to hex her after all. But then she thought about it. Weren't there more aspects of magic than just hexing? Maybe this man was just trying to lull her into a false sense of security. She was back on edge again. There was no way he was going to distract her that easily.
