I've had this idea lingering in my head for a while and i've been thinking for days now of what race i'd want one of my planned characters, Veikko, to be...but he doesn't seem to really fit any of the races properly.
Then my mind started drawing up a new potential race based on the idea i had and my search for something my character would work best as aaaaand this, with some help from Joohlia is what we've come up with?
The Boreai
This smaller race are almost like distant cousins to the race of faeries. According to legend, the race originated in Siberia when the first humans ventured to the land:
"A young sorcerer was traveling in search of a safe land to settle for his clan. Soon, however, he became lost in the wasteland and feared he was doomed.
He melted snow to drink, but no matter how much he drank, he spent more energy creating it. Finally, he came upon an icy pond inhabited by a family of water faeries.
"Please," he called to them. "Let me drink from your water that I might live."
But the faeries were mistrustful of humans, and turned him away. The sorcerer stayed on the shore of the pond, though, and waited until the faeries fell asleep. He crept to the edge of the pond and began to drink from it.
The faeries awoke to the sounds of his drinking and, enraged, pulled him under the water to drown him. The sorcerer surfaced in the cold pond just long enough to tell them, "You are cruel beasts, cold as this land and with ice in your veins. I place a curse that you and your line should never know anything but the cold in your hearts, that you should be shunned from your people and live a life of isolation."
And from that day forward, the faeries of that region and all of their descendents were born to the element of ice, unable to transform into faerie form to live in harmony with other faeries".
They say the race once went by the name ‘ice faeries’ but conflict drove them away from the race they once called their own and they adopted the name of their God ‘Boreas’ and declared themselves a separate race. They can create, manipulate and absorb ice.
The Boreai have always had a feud with fire faeries, some say this is what drove them away.
Personality wise, the Boreai often come off as cold and harsh as the ice they can control. They are usually cool, calm and patient but with a fury, that if provoked, could rival any fire faery in its destructiveness. They're also a race that doesn't trust others outside their race, they're very cautious creature.
One clear difference between the Boreai and Faeries is that the Boreai do not have mini-forms, nor do they have wings. Also, their blood runs blue instead of the usual crimson, it also has a strange cooling-effect and taste to vampires. Almost like a melted icepop (yes, a melted icepop).
Originally, the race was quite anti-social preferred solitary, separating themselves from the other races and sticking to their own kind. They had tuck to the colder regions of the world but as time as changed, so has the race and now the Boreai can be found in warmer regions.
Like the Sirens, the Boreai stayed out of the war mostly they've never been a race that wanted power and they very much were happy to stay out of the messy fight between the four bigger supernatural race.
NOW,
on a more complex level, even though the Boreai consider themselves a separate race, Joohlia suggested that maybe they fall more under the title of 'Cursed' or 'Mutated' Faeries. Which could be interesting, because then you could play with the idea of Lightning Fae (originated from Air), Metal Fae (originated from Earth), Light Fae (fire) and Dark Fae (corrupted soul fae).
So,
Water -> Ice - the largest of the Mutated species and consider themselves a separate race called the Boreai. Can manipulate, create, control and absorb ice.
Air -> Lightning - mutated from the race's ability to control the weather these can manipulate, create, control and absorb electric fields.
Earth -> Metal - as a result of industrialization, these have mutated to be able to manipulate metal.
Fire -> Light - these can manipulate, control, create and absorb light.
Soul -> Dark - corrupted Soul fae have mutated into these, they can only feel and control the darker more negative emotions and fear. These have even been known to be able to create illusions of a person's worst fear that are so vivid, the victim would believe it was real.
The Lightning, Metal, Light and Dark faeries would be rare though maybe? And because of it not really that many would've been involved in the war?
...ummm, it's a lot to chew, but it's an idea?
