The airport is strangely silent.
One would expect an airport to be full of people ready to fly off or to enter the country, tour guides waving giant signs and general chatter everywhere. An annoying, mechanised voice being projected to every end of the airport through the PA system. The airport is strangely silent, with only a small number of people milling about, possibly waiting for their flights to come in. But then again, this is probably not so unexpected.
He is leaving in the middle of the school year, after all.
Looking back, it seems rather stupid of him to not wait the extra two-or-so weeks for his fifth year and official education at Northvale to finally be over. Counterproductive, really; he's spent so much of his life at the school, waiting to get his high school diploma so that he can do something in his life. But then again, he knows that this is hardly a surprise.
What with his week-long impromptu trip to France with Alexander Torres and Panny dropping out of school, he doesn't think anyone will be surprised to find him gone tomorrow morning. School has always been a waste of time to him, after all. And what would he do with a high school diploma, anyway? Become a teacher like Liam, Cain and Connor? Really?
He doesn't know what he wants to do with his life, but Tobias certainly knows that it's not to follow in his older brothers' footsteps. He's not going to do something as dull and tame as that; it won't be able to keep his attention, and it just seems like he's asking to get provoked by some stupid, random student.
Perhaps this is going to wind up more of a journey of self-discovery than anything. He's even being somewhat responsible about leaving this time. Text messages have been left on his brothers' phones (the ones that might care, at least) and Elodie has gotten a roomful of cards and dresses and love from him, enough to last her at least a year. Panny has a voicemail waiting on her phones, Aria has a note spelled to appear in front of her once she wakes up. At least he's not leaving completely unannounced this time.
He knows he needs this, though-- maybe this is how salmon feel when they are driven to return to the stream from whence they spawned-- in the sense that his formative years were spent in France, fighting in the war, and he just knows, deep within him, that he needs to return (for reasons still unknown). Tobias' first trip to France changed him completely; he wonders how this second trip will.
He wonders if he'll ever come back, although he knows that he must. He has family in Northvale, no matter what, even if there's too much family drama. He does want to know how Liam and Pandora will end up, and if Aria will eventually be happy; he wants to know if when Cain and Locke break up, and if Connor will ever stop being such a big, fat shithead. But those are thoughts for another day, and he's sure that no matter what, Panny (at least) will keep him updated. She seems like the type.
Other than his family, though, Tobias has surprisingly few reservations to leaving. He's actually kind of looking forward to going to France again, with its rolling fields and bustling cities. He's missed Paris. He's missed Versailles, Schœlcher, Seine-Saint-Denis, Avignon-- the big cities and small towns, everything. He's missed being able to talk freely in one of the most elegant languages. He's missed being free, for he's never felt as free as he did when he was having downtime in France.
He'll probably be glad when he touches down; glad to be home.
Tobias steps on the plane, and settles into his seat. He takes out earphones and starts listening to music, closing his eyes. His watch has already been set to the correct timezone; he knows what time he will reach, and he has plans (and enough money) to put up at a hotel until he finds a place of his own. He closes the curtains and allows the music to wash over him, the soft but beautiful voice washing over him and relaxing him more than he's felt in a long time. By the time the captain makes the announcement that the plane is taking off, he is already asleep.
The airport is strangely silent as Tobias leaves.
