Cat fur. It was horrible stuff that just seemed to get everywhere. On the carpets, all over duvets... even stuck to clothes, for God's sake! Not that Matthew minded that much. Because the benefits of owning cats much outweighed the drawback of having cat fur litter everything that a person may have owned. And the smell, sometimes. But then, that only really happened when you litter trained a cat. That became less important and less noticeable as they aged, and when you could start to let them go out on their own to sort themselves out. But that wasn't the point. The point was that there weren't many disadvantages to owning a cat or three, and those that were present were insignificant anyway.
Thing was, now that he lived here, he wasn't all too comfortable with letting his cats roam around the outside by themselves. He'd heard that animal blood slowed down a vampire's senses and abilities, but come on. That didn't necessarily mean that they wouldn't go for a nice fat cat, like Ricotta. Why did they think he was named after a cheese? He looked like a fricking cheese, for Christ's sake. A lump of cheese. And cheese was yummy. He didn't know if supernatural creatures even liked cheese, but maybe they liked cats. Or cheese. Or both. Now wasn't that a terrifying thought.
So, he'd thought that maybe it was just better to take them for walks around the school. It was safer that way. Because, well, at least they weren't all on their own in this big, scary world of non human entities. And it was highly unlikely that someone would go for a cat when there was a human there to compensate. Humans, the fifth year had already found, were a commodity that was severely lacking in Northvale's little world. Mainly because not many humans knew that the supernatural word existed. He only knew because of Esther. Oh, Esther. A little, dull ache knocked at his chest for a moment. He missed her a lot, he really did.
He found himself, soon enough, in the student's lounge, Blighty in his arms, Mog and Ricotta at his feet, purring and rubbing against his legs. He felt a little bit like Dr. Doolittle, but... but with cats. Dr Catlittle. No... no, it didn't have the same ring to it. It wouldn't work out that way, Which was unfair, but really, what could he do about it? He ended up sitting down just in front of the sofa on the thick, fluffy carpet, putting Blighty down and just petting each cat in turn, so that they would all feel equally loved. Because, come on, he had just carried Blighty here. He didn't want the other two to feel neglected.

I liked Northvale. I had decided when I found out I could bring my cat, Sunflower. She was just so cute and I couldn't live without her. I just loved her so much. I really wanted to bring her along a friend but my parents wouldn't let me.
I realized I hadn't taken her out of my room since I had gotten to Northvale. I was glad I brought my cat carrier bag because I wasn't sure I wanted her to roam out on her own. She had to be shown around first. First I showed her the tower in which I lived. She seemed oblivious to most of it because she was a cat. Then I decided to show her the student commons room. I figured there would be someone there I could show my little Sunflower off too.
When I walked in I noticed there was someone already in there. He had... cats! I squealed slightly in joy. Another cat lover! "H-Hi I-I see you like cats too!" I managed to stumble out. I thought about letting Sunny down to meet the other cats but I wasn't sure how she'd react since it been a while since she'd been social. "I'm Aine and this is Sunflower."

Again, cat fur. Why did it have to come off so easily? It wasn't really as if the three were particularly old, anyway. So why they were all shedding their fur, he had absolutely no idea. He was pretty sure it was harmless for them, though, so it wasn't as if that actually mattered much anyway. But still! Maybe it was because they were all relatively fluffy, especially Ricotta. Maybe it wasn't fat after all, just fur. Maybe his fur made him look fat. Maybe it was just fat. There was no way of being certain for sure. Maybe it depended on what time it was, or what the feline had eaten that day, or something else. One thing was for certain; it kept the boy guessing.
And, to those who didn't understand, this may have seemed as lame as lame could possibly be. Here he was, a twenty year old man, old enough to be working and doing something with his life. And what was he doing? Sitting in a room, in a place where his kind didn't belong, playing with three cats. All of which belonged to him. But it wasn't lame. No, not one bit. Cats were good. Cats were always there when you needed them. Cats didn't have to move away and leave you alone. Sure, they might have died faster than people did. But while they were alive, they showered you with more affection than a person ever could. Okay, maybe not. But still, he had his reasons.
He noticed two out of the trio wander toward the door, and he couldn't help but panic a little. He didn't want them out there alone, for reasons previously disclosed. It was dangerous. However, when he lifted his eyes to check on them, he saw that they'd merely gone to greet a newcomer, who had a cat in her arms herself. They purred loudly (they were right suck ups when they wanted to be), rubbing themselves around the girl's ankles. Blighty, however, had other ideas, and just sat in the human's lap, blinking up at him with big, green eyes.
"Ah, sorry about them," he apologised before the girl spoke, ineffectually trying to summon the pair back to him. But, as she did speak, he couldn't help but give her a wide smile. Did he like cats. Well. Considering he was surrounded by three of them, it was a safe enough bet, wasn't it. He chuckled, with a nod. "I guess you could say that I like cats," he said nonchalantly, as if it wasn't really anything. But there was a slightly teasing undertone to his words, and a smile broadening his features.
He nodded as the girl introduced herself as Aine. He'd never heard that name before, and he couldn't say that he didn't like it. It was quite a nice name. Oh, and the cat was Sunflower. "Well, hi," he greeted, shuffling somewhat awkwardly due to the lump of fur in his lap. "I'm Matt." He pointed to the two cats rubbing around her ankles, and then the one in his lap. "Those two are Mog and Ricotta, and here's Blighty."

It was a good thing I wasn't allergic to cats. Then life would be really sad and I wouldn't have Sunny. I loved Sunny probably more than anything else in my life. She was just so precious and sweet. Plus, she had the coolest coloring I've ever seen on a cat. She was mostly orange except for the black on her face, ears, and tail. She looked like the flower she was named after.
The guy, Matt, was kinda cute and knowing me, my face was going to be about as red as a tomato. Plus he liked cats. I liked people who liked cats. Cat people were the best. They were usually friendly and weren't too pushy. They didn't ask a heck ton of questions. They told it like it was. Or at least that was my experience with cat people.
I decided I might just let Sunny down. The other cats seemed nice. They were rubbing up against my legs. Not all cats were like that. Plus there were three of them so they were used to other cats. Sunny was too. I had 4 cats at home. My mom let me get Sunny and Charlie after my dad died. Then we got Harley and Tam when I got back from rehab.
I set Sunny down. I thought she might move around look at her new surroundings but instead she just laid down where I set her. "They're really cute! I said as I bent down to pet both Mog and Ricotta. "And Sweet!" I said matching Matt's smile. "I really like their names too! I read somewhere that moggy means cat and I know Ricotta's a cheese. I wish I was more creative with my cat's names. I named Sunflower, Sunflower 'cause she looks like one. My mom made me leave home Charlie, Harley and Tam." I could tell I was rambling again. I tended to do that when I was talking about something I loved.

The thing about cat people, and cats, for that matter, was that they weren't overly demanding things or people. Which was good for Matthew, really, because the way that his past had happened, there were a few things that he'd rather not have discussed. And that was it. With cats/cat people, there would be no game of twenty questions about his life and times, because, really? That was just painful to discuss sometimes. And not because of the bad things that'd happened to him, because of the embarrassing and stupid way that he'd dealt with it. He knew now that what he did didn't help him in any way, just made him totally disregard his problems and not get them fixed. But no one would be asking about that, now would they? It didn't matter to them. Because they weren't nosy.
Which is why Matthew was so thankful that it was a cat person that just so happened to wander into the room at that particular moment. She could have been anyone, or anything (Matt didn't have the enhanced senses to tell what she was, like half of the school's population did). But of all things, she was a cat person, like him. And cat people stuck together, didn't they? That was the way things should have gone down in the world. And if they didn't, then the human would have been highly surprised and disappointed in humanity. Because humanity could be incredibly stupid sometimes. So, shamefully, it wouldn't have surprised him at all.
So, it turned out that the girl had four cats, not just the one. A little bit of jealousy rose within him, which was stupid, really. She had more cats, though. And, as childish as it was, he couldn't help it! Four was more than three last time he checked. But it wasn't the time or the place to be childish, really, so he had to just let it go for now. Even if he kind of didn't want to. Besides, he was a bit too nice for that. He hoped.
"Honestly?" he said in slight surprise. the names were just... names, in his opinion. Nothing special, nothing funny, nothing clever, just names. Because, well, he only needed their names so that each one would know when they were being called and when they weren't. The names served their purpose, and that was all that mattered. "I never really thought the names to be anything special. Sunflower is a pretty name, though!" He gave her a smile, and looked down at the fat lump of fur in his lap, willing the little bugger to move so that he could get up and say hi properly. It didn't look like it was happening anytime soon, though. Not that he really minded. He was lazy, anyway.

I think I put too much thought into things sometimes. Things like cat names, what I wore, and what people said. I always put too much thought into everything. I also wondered a lot and made lots of assumptions. Not bad ones I did try to hope for the best. "I guess I think to much about those kinds of things. I gave my cats really generic names. I wasn't really too creative when we got them."
I wondered what Matt was. He didn't seem like anything scary. I hoped he was something cool like a faerie or maybe even or borea or even a human. I knew there wasn't many humans so maybe Matt was one of the few.
I decided to pick Sunflower back up and sit on the chair near then couch he was sitting on. My legs automatically went up and I sat crossed legged. "So, Matt, what are you? If you don't mind my asking. I'm a light borea which means I can control light, if you didn't know." I smiled softly at him. I fingered my scepter that was in my pocket. I always kept it in my pocket just in case I needed it but there wasn't much you could do with light powers. You could really only make it less dark, see really far, and make yourself less visible. Well, that was the extent of my powers at the moment. When I got stronger I'd be able to do some pretty cool stuff like have x-ray vision, but that was when I was when I got older and became a higher level.
