After an absolutely exhausting training session in which he had pretty much lost track of time, Tobias headed back to the West Tower, hoping that he wouldn't be caught by anyone for wandering around so late at night. It was already 2AM and, well, the only reason why he had stopped was because he suddenly felt this nagging feeling like he had to get back to the West Tower. Frankly, he wasn't sure why, but the feeling had kept increasing over the past few hours and by then, it was already a burning need for him to return to the tower. For what reason, though, he had no clue.
The moment when he opened the door to the common room, though, he realised what was wrong. Curled up on a couch was Pan, who was his best friend and basically his sister, sobbing and watching the fire-- this had to be about Professor Holmes, then. The stinking bastard had left Pandora without good reason and if Tobias ever managed to track him down, he was going to tie him up by his intestines and spell all his red blood cells to be replaced with knives. Or maybe he'd make it such that whenever Professor Holmes tried to feed, he'd end up tasting nothing but a leper's urine. But even that wouldn't be enough for Professor Holmes.
Oh, how Tobias wished that he could just kill the disgusting old dinosaur! He knew that idiot wasn't good for Pandora, he'd stood by that from the start and that opinion hadn't changed and now? Now that had been proven to be fact. Looking at Pandora brokenly sobbing in front of the fire broke his heart. Quietly, Tobias snuck up behind her and gave her a gentle hug, making himself comfortable on the sofa. He took her wand up from the floor and placed it on her lap, and sat with her in silence in the hopes that maybe she'd feel better. He didn't want Pandora to do anything stupid, and he knew that the best way to do that was to give her some silent support-- if she wanted someone to talk to, she would speak first, but Tobias wasn't going to pressure her to talk about something she wasn't yet ready to talk about.
He really hoped that Pandora would get over the dickhead soon. It was lucky that Tobias had come back to the West Tower, because he dreaded to think what might have happened if Pandora had been alone for even a minute longer. Pan should never have to suffer through her heartache alone, he thought to himself, because she was such a wonderful friend to him already and he never wanted to see her hurt. That was the only reason why he hadn't already killed Professor Holmes, anyway.

The witch hadn’t meant to start crying. Really, she didn’t. Too many tears had been shed over him, but more still came. Just when she thought that they’d stopped. Pan blamed lack of sleep, she really did. That’s why she was just so... well... bleh. Though, lack of sleep wasn’t something she could help. She cursed her insomnia. Heck, she cursed her mother. At the end of the day, it was that woman that had started it. Leaving your kid, when she was fourteen, just learning her powers. It was just cruel.
It seemed they all left her in the end. First her mother, and then Sebastian. It hurt to even think of him. Say his name. Anything really. She hadn’t stepped foot near the science rooms in near enough two weeks. She couldn’t. Going there, it would kill her. She didn’t care what anyone said. And if Sicarus said something? Pandora would drop out of the school. The thought had already ran through her mind a few times.
She was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she didn’t hear the door open. She didn’t hear someone coming up behind her. And, well, when they wrapped their arms around her she jumped out of her skin. Turning, she saw Toby and instantly relaxed. But, oh God, he’d see her like this. She quickly brushed the tear tracks from her face; Pandora did not like feeling weak and God forbid if anyone saw her weak... She hated it. Even if that person was Toby, a guy that was practically a member of her family.
As he placed the wand in her lap, she picked it up and began to twirl it between her fingers. Toby didn’t speak and she was actually, well, irritated by that. She needed a distraction and silence would not give her that. Though, it was nice to have him by her side. A small smile worked its way onto her face. “What’re you doing up so late?” she asked, looking to him. It was the early hours of the morning and she had an excuse. “You’re lucky, if Miss Sicarus had caught you, you’d be dead. Or she would, now that sounds like a good thing” she chuckled softly.
Something in her brain told her that if Miss Sicarus tried to start an argument with Tobias, Tobias, then things wouldn’t turn out well for her. She leant her head against her friend’s shoulder. Her eyes once more finding themselves looking at the fire. It was pretty. Her little pyromaniac side came out and told her that. “I’m okay, Toby” she spoke softly, finally opening up slightly “well, I’m getting better. God, I should have listened to you from day one, shouldn’t I? You seem to have a better judge of character than I do. Tell you what; you’re my new decision maker. Guys, if there are any, have to be approved by you in the future”. The thought scared her. Future guys. Did she really want another guy? Maybe she’d just stay single forever. Become a crazy old cat lady or something. No. She hated cats. Maybe dogs? Yeah. That sounded like a plan.

Tobias smiled softly at Pandora when she asked what he was still doing up at the hour. So she wanted a distraction, eh? Yeah, sure, he'd give her that. "Hn, training. Trying to get better control, y'know, so I can hurt people better." He played with her hair while talking, letting the soft blonde strands distract him from basically everything else. "And Sicarus wouldn't be able to do anything to me, Panny, and you know it. I'd just hex her genitals on her face or something." He went silent for a while, before smiling. "I think I might do that anyway. It sounds hilarious."
He sighed a bit when Pandora started opening up about Professor Holmes. Well, that was the intended result, but Tobias just... he really hated seeing and hearing Panny be so heartbroken, okay? "Hey, don't say that," he murmured, wiping away a tear from her face. "You wouldn't be the Panny I know if you let something like this break you so badly. I'm sure that as stupid as Professor Holmes might be for giving you up, you guys had some great times together, right? And you wouldn't be the Panny you are today without him."
There was a moment of silence before Tobias continued. "And come on, you're Panny. Even if I became your new decision-maker, you'd just run off after another guy even if I disapproved of them. I don't know which guys are best for you, Panny, only you do; you've always known what you want. Otherwise, you wouldn't be Panny." He gave her a soft, tired smile before continuing. "If it makes you feel better, though, I'll always be here to interrogate all your boyfriends and I'll always be here for you, even if they all turn out to be dicks. And then we can string them up in the middle of the common room and torture them together." Relatively awkwardly, he kissed her forehead and let her lay her head on his shoulder.
When Tobias noticed Pandora looking at the fire, seemingly entranced by it, he started waving his hand around to make it form different patterns. He felt like saying any unnecessary words, even Latin ones, would ruin the entire moment and make Pandora stop opening up-- which would be horrible, because Panny needed this-- so he relied on his nonverbal spellwork. The flames slowly morphed into various things, like little dragons that were puffing out smoke rings and fancy-ish patterns and swirls. He didn't really know what Pandora would like, but he figured that she'd probably appreciate his manipulation of the flames.
"And, hey, if you never find another guy that's right for you, I'll always be here, okay? I'm better than any guy you could ever find," he told her, sniffing. "I mean, who else will bring you tea and let you whack them when you're on your period? No one, I'm telling you-- I'm the best guy ever. You might as well just marry me and get it over with." He snorted. Gosh, being married to Pan-- now that was an idea. But maybe it'd make her laugh or something, which was what he wanted. Anything to make her smile again, after the few completely depressing days she'd had.

The memories of their duel filled her when he spoke about learning better control. She felt him playing with her hair and she let him. He did need to learn better control. That way she could so get him to duel with her again. Now that would be a wonderful distraction but not one she wanted right now. Maybe after she managed to sleep... She giggled as he spoke about hexing Miss Sicarus. And then when he mentioned that he might do it? Well, she found herself grinning somewhat. “It does sound hilarious” she told him.
He had to mention the good times, didn’t he? She felt the pain in her chest. Those were the hardest things to think about. They just made it harder to accept the fact he’d gone. Of course there were good times. There were so many good times. He’d been the love of her life. She couldn’t forget him that easily. And he had changed her. So much. Before she met him she hadn’t really cared about anyone. Now? She actually relied so much on her friends. Especially Toby.
She chuckled again at hearing Toby’s next words. They were kind of true. No one could tell the girl what she could or couldn’t do. They never had. It was why her father had given up telling her what to do. It wasn’t that he didn’t care, she understood that now, it was just the fact that he knew the only way she would learn was to make her own mistakes. She’d always known what she wanted. It was true, in a way. She had. But right now? She had no clue. No clue at all.
Stringing up all the men in here and torturing them? She actually let out a laugh. “So morbid, Toby, so morbid. Sounds fun though, but hopefully they won’t all be dicks. One of them will be right, let’s hope” she told him, chuckles still escaping her every now and then as she imagined the screaming first years when they saw the half-dead men strung from the ceiling. He kissed her forehead and she couldn’t help but feel how weird Toby was when he was like this. She wasn’t complaining, but it was a shame other people didn’t see it and realise he actually wasn’t a dick.
Her eyes noticed the flames beginning to move. She understood that Toby was doing it and just watched for a moment. There was a dragon, and then just pretty patterns being made. It reminded her of the clouds once again, but this time Tobias wasn’t using verbal magic. He wasn’t even using his wand for this.
As Toby spoke more, she listened. He was right. Toby was better than any guy out there. She’d never say it out loud, but, she was beginning to care for Toby more than Alex. Toby just seemed to, understand her more. They had slightly more in common. Yes. Toby actually was a better friend to her right now. She laughed again but her laughter cut off at his final words. Marrying Tobias? She knew he was joking but her heart was pounding in her chest.
She tried to shrug off the momentary panic. A smile forming its way onto her face once more. Marriage, just the whole idea of it, scared her right now. Though, in all honesty, marrying Toby actually seemed like a half-way okay idea. At least she’d know he would never hurt her. “Hey, that’s not a bad idea. I’d be a Redferne, and that would be epic. If you aren’t married by forty, Tobias, give me a ring. I’ll be your wife” she told him, smiling softly.

Tobias went back to playing with Pandora's hair, twirling it around his finger and watching it unravel. He could see how much Pandora was hurting and he just wished that he could make it stop, although he knew perfectly well that he wasn't the guy for that. She would find someone, eventually, but Tobias would always be her brother and would always be there for her, no matter what. He would never leave her, or do anything to hurt her, not like one of her shitty boyfriends-- he was better than that. He was basically her brother, and family was family, whether they were blood-related or not-- they'd never let one another fall (alone, at least).
He snuggled closer to Pandora and smiled a bit when she told him that he was being morbid. Well, he was pretty morbid by nature. "Hey, nothing wrong with being a little morbid," he told her, laughing a bit. "But yeah, I'm sure at least one of them will be right. It seems statistically improbable that none of them would be." He ruffled her hair a bit-- gosh. A thought struck him. "Are you going to like, cut your hair or something, like all those girls who break up do? Because you really shouldn't; I like your hair."
It would be an absolute pity if Pandora cut her hair. It was really nice to run his fingers through and stuff like that, so... yeah. And then Pandora looked a bit like she was panicking, and then told him that she'd marry him if he wasn't married by forty. Hm. "Sure, if you're not married by the time you're 39. But I'm sure you will be, okay? You're pretty awesome." And then he laughed, imagining him and Pandora doing the entire domesticity thing. "Although the entire thing sounds relatively horrifying. Having a wife, that is. Settling down and all that crap."
The idea of someone like him getting married sounded pretty bad, actually. His dream had always been to just wander around the world-- heck, he was definitely going to do that after he graduated, right? He already had plans and everything. Being away from stress and life sounded wonderful-- he wondered whether Pandora would like to join him. It would be great! They could go on an adventure and frankly, there was no one he knew of that he'd rather go on an adventure with. The only problem was that she remained one year younger than him, so if he wanted to go adventuring with her, he'd have to wait a year. He'd see. He didn't want to just invite someone on his trip and then regret it or something, after all.
He couldn't think of a single way in which he'd regret inviting Pandora along, though. He really did love her, and she was the best sister ever-- the only one who he'd actually be able to tolerate on a trip. "I always figured I'd go off travelling the world before I ever did something like settling down. It sounds pretty horrible and boring. Imagine taking care of kids!" He told her, a mock-horrified look on his face. Although Tobias actually kind of loved kids (those that weren't little shits, anyway), he wasn't going to let anyone know that. Ever. Ever.

Tobias just kept on playing with her hair and she really didn't mind. She was content with just snuggling up to him and watching the flames. God. She really did love Toby. If things had been different, she wondered if that family love could have been romantic. She shrugged it off. It didn't matter now. The Redferne would always be her brother. Through thick and thin. Even if he was being a total dick. Even if she got mad at him. At the end of the day - she loved him. And she always would. He helped her. The present time being a prime example. Never had she really seen Toby as the hugging type but here he was allowing Pan to snuggle up against him. She needed the comfort, though, so much. Just needed someone to wrap their arms around her. So she didn't feel so alone.
A soft chuckle left her at his words. He was right. Being morbid was good. Heck. It was fun. Pandora was morbid herself. She loved the thought of hurting people, and weapons, and fighting. Of course, at the same time she was a lovely person. It was such a contrast. Her whole personality was a juxtaposition but she loved it. She was different because of it. And as Tobias went on to speak. Yes. There just had to be someone out there for her. Her perfect guy. Sebastian had never been perfect. They had argued, quite a lot in fact. Of course, she'd looked past their differences as she had loved him but now she was starting to see the flaws, the cracks in the relationship. They had never been perfect for one another. Maybe now she'd be able to do it. Find her Prince Charming. If he even existed.
As Tobias ruffled her hair she frowned. Instantly neatening it with her hand. Though his words made her chuckle again. "Don't worry, Toby, I'm not like all girls. And even if I did go all batshit crazy and cut it, with a flick of my wand it can be back to normal. Call me vain, but I am quite good at spells like that". So, she knew spells that changed her appearance. The witch couldn't help her vanity. It was just a part of her. She liked to look good. Was there anything really wrong with that?
Her friend was just too sweet. He'd agreed to marry her. She laughed at his latter words. "Hey. Come on. I'd be a great wife. I wouldn't give a shit what you did. Unless you cheated on me. Then I'd kill you, Tobias. But thanks. I hope that I will find someone by the time I'm thirty-nine". Or she'd become a crazy dog lady. Though, she wasn't going to tell him that. No. That was actually pretty sad and she didn't want to tell him that. Somehow planning your lonely future didn't seem like much of a conversation topic. Then again, it was getting harder for her to think of topics. Having Toby by her side helped her to relax. And she prayed that her peace of mind would lead to sleep.
As the male spoke she smiled. Nuzzling into his side a little more. "Don't say you're gonna leave me, Toby. Though if you do I expect presents from every place you visit" she tried to put a light-hearted, joking tone to her voice but it had turned rather serious. She really didn't want Toby to leave Northvale. She needed him. The man was one of her best friends. Heck. He was slowly becoming her best friend. She couldn't live without him. She just couldn't.

Panny's soft chuckle brought a smile to Tobias' lips. It was quite nice to know that he could make her laugh even in such circumstances, and at least it showed that she wasn't completely depressed. That would've been horrible, and he would've been morally obliged to hunt down and kill that douchebag of a vampire if it was so. In fact, he might have to do that anyway.
But then again, this was hardly the time or place for it. Right now was the time to comfort Panny. Then, of course, Panny started talking about re-growing her hair and gosh. He snorted, laughing a bit. "Vaaaaain, Panny. Next thing I know, you'll be asking for mascara and eyeliner for your birthday! Or are you going to start talking about some new shade of lipstick doesn't match your skintone?" he teased a bit, although his teasing this time was a little bit forced. But that was hardly his fault, was it? It was more than a bit hard to try and be cheerful when your best friend was feeling so depressed.
His grin morphed into a sad smile, though, when Panny told him how she hoped that she'd find someone by the time she was 39. "Don't worry, Panny, you'll definitely find someone," he told her, running his fingers through her hair again. "And when you find that person who's completely right for you, I promise that I'll be happy for you. Even if I don't like him, okay?" Because Panny was basically a Redferne already, and Redfernes always stood by their family, no matter what happend-- unless their family was a bunch of abusive dicks. But the idea was still there. Redfernes were frighteningly loyal (to their siblings) and since Panny was his sister, Tobias would just have to deal with it if she started dating someone he didn't like.
He hummed a bit as he ran his fingers through her hair again. "We'll see, Panny, but I'll never leave you, okay? Even if I do decide to go on that trip, I'll email you every day or something. And I'll buy you tons of gifts. Anythingi you want." he told her. "Anyway, I'm a year older than you, so I'll be graduating before you. We'll have to see, Panny." He didn't really want to talk about it right then, but if it was going to make Panny feel better, he'd talk about anything-- even about her hitting on his brothers or whatever. As long as it got her mind off the crap.

She gave a small chuckle at his words. "Hey, leave me alone. I'm a girl.. we are vain. And I'm no worse than you are so ha." her words, even though she tried to put humour into them, still lacked that quality. She was trying to be herself. Normal, well, not really normal because she never was but.. as normal as she could be. She tried to force a little more humour out of herself though. Maybe, somehow, if she tried to act like herself then she would become herself again. It was unlikely but.. the witch could try? "If anyone's vain here then it's you, seriously, it's a wonder you aren't a Siren.." she forced a laugh.
When he spoke again, those words, they actually made a small smile break out onto her face. A real one. It wasn't forced. She just, found her lips twitching up. "I'm going to hold you to that, Tobias. Though I can't say the same for whoever you end up with. I'll judge them, and threaten them for all it's worth. You deserve the best, and I won't be happy until you find it" she told him. A sudden strike of protectiveness running through her. She cared for her brother and she would make sure that the person that caught his heart truly deserved him. Because it would take a very special person to be worthy of Tobias Redferne. She'd never admit it to anyone, because his ego would just go through the roof, but her friend, her brother only deserved someone who was perfect.
His words on leaving her actually rather scared her. She didn't want him to leave. He couldn't leave, could he? Northvale was his home. Where his siblings were. And she couldn't stand thinking about him being away from the place. Though, as he ran his fingers through her hair and spoke, she softened slightly. She couldn't hold him back if he wanted to go. That would be cruel. But God, would she miss him. More than he probably understood.
"I understand Toby, I really do. And yes, if you go I will expect you to tell me. And email me. And send me back presents and postcards. Though no pictures of you by all these awesome places. You'll make me jealous" she told him, cuddling into him just a little bit more. A yawn left her and she chuckled a little. Her eyelids suddenly feeling extremely heavy. They shut as she rested her head against her friends shoulder but she tried to keep herself awake. Tried to stay talking to her friend. But, it had been a long time since she'd managed to sleep and, well, she probably wouldn't be able to fight it much longer. But, for now, she was concious of everything around her. The fire crackling. The wind outside the window. And then there was the soft, steady beat of her friend's heart in his chest. This symphony making her relax. Slowly beginning to send her off, into that much needed land of sleep.
