Things We Lost in the Fire [DAN]

Brent rolled his eyes, a slight smile tugging at his lips. Hephaestus help him, he was going soft. This was all Dan's fault. There was that tiny, motherly corner of Brent's mind that wanted to start sobbing everywhere and hold Daniel close because he was alive and some of the teacher's worst fears had failed to come true. He couldn't help but feel relieved about that.

"'S okay. I get that." Wooh. Something truthful had left his mouth. Brent got defence mechanisms since he had plenty of experience with them.

It was tempting to laugh at the drastic turn in the direction of their meeting. Suddenly things were almost awkward - but in a good sort of way? Despite how bitter he could be, Brent couldn't say 'no'. He was inwardly cooing over Daniel not wanting to be his enemy too. "Yeah, sure."

Dan felt sort of... he didn't actually know how he felt. Relief, maybe, that Brent had forgiven him for being all weird? Yeah, that would make sense. And just watching Brent stand there grinning made him want to smile so much. He was so glad they were friends again- because they were, right? The werewolf didn't really get it, but he was feeling really happy again, and it must have been related to the fact he was reunited with his kind of only friend.

It was so tempting to hug his old friend right then that the teen didn't quite trust himself. "Thanks for that." Daniel finally gave in to the temptation of grinning now, and stood there sort of awkwardly. Still, it was a nice awkwardness now- sort of reassuring. Because you could definitely get reassuring awkardness. While the want to hug Brent was still there, the young man did his best to ignore it-after all, he was a big boy now, and they didn't have hugs. Not even from those people he was so close to that they were practically his mum.

There was a sort of weird moment of awkwardness that followed their reconciliation-type thing. Like, a sort of weird post-reconciliation-type thing awkwardness in which Brent really felt the urge to just go ahead and hug the boy. It was one of those hug-type moments. So, fighting the weak urge he had to hold back, he stepped forward and engulfed the werewolf in a warm embrace. "God, you don't know how grateful I am to know you're alive." he sighed. Brent's eyes weren't watering... no. And if they were, he was blaming it on the breeze hitting his face. Nope. He wasn't getting emotional here.

The awkwardness following Daniel's reunion with Brent was short, as the elder man decided to take it upon himself to give a hug. And judging by the crossbreed's voice, he was getting all emotional- maybe even getting watery eyes. The werewolf was tempted to pick up on it, until he realised his own eyes were brimming with tears and he couldn't risk saying anything unless he started sobbing or something.

Truthfully, Dan had missed hugs. It had been ages since he'd last had one, and they were quite possibly the best things ever. "...I've missed you, Brent." And no, he wasn't having really nostalgic flashbacks. And that definitely wasn't a tear making its way down his face. No. He didn't cry.

It wasn't often that Brent got so caught up in all his emotions that he almost cried but... it also wasn't often that someone like Daniel appeared again out of the blue. Losing him had honestly been like losing a son and Brent didn't think he'd be able to cope with that again. How could any parent? ...Dan wasn't allowed to leave him this time, definitely not. Or Brent was just going to curl up and die. "M-missed you t-too." He struggled to hold back his tears but Daniel had actually missed him and, no, he couldn't deal with this. Brent started sobbing. It wasn't violent, hysterical sobbing but... it was sobbing nonetheless.

Judging by the way that Brent was so obviously crying everywhere, he wasn't in any position to be doing anything logical. Which meant Dan would have to be the sensible one right now. He hastily wiped away the tear tracing its way down his cheek- if he was going to tell Brent to man up and stop crying, he couldn't be a hypocrite. Extracting himself from Brent's arms, he held the older man by the shoulders and looked straight into his face. "Hey, it's okay now. I'm back, aren't I?" Despite the fact it felt to him like he was comforting a small child, he drew Brent into a hug himself.

"It's okay. I'm back now. Don't cry."

Oh god Daniel was being so grown up here. Brent could not deal with this at all. See, this is why he shouldn't be allowed to form emotional attachments to people or he'd end up completely losing it like he was now. Daniel could hold himself together but, no, he couldn't. Brent had been around almost thirty years longer than the werewolf too. That was kind of really embarrassing. "Not.. cr-cr-cryin'." he stammered out between sobs as he clung to Dan.

Daniel wasn't sure whether to find Brent's sobbing sort of cute, or embarrassing, or sad. In the end, he continued being comforting, and kept on telling Brent to stop crying, although it didn't seem to be altogether effective. As Brent continued to sob, Dan patted him on the back in what he hoped was a comforting way and did his best to stave off the tears that were threatening to roll down his own face, succeeding this time. Sighing, Dan managed not to go off on an emotional tangent, which he would have been proud of if he wasn't preoccupied with the forty-eight-year-old crossbreed crying everywhere. "Of course you're not crying, Brent. Of course not."

Nope, Brent wasn't crying - there was just some Daniel in his eye. He should probably just stop now because he was afraid to see what sort of looks he was getting from passers-by. And Brent could feel Dianne judging him... so what if she was nothing more than a dumb dog? Because he could feel it.

"See. I'm... I'm a-all good." he laughed shakily, pulling back from Dan and wiping his face with the back of his hand. Dianne looked up at him but Brent ignored her. That was her judgemental face, he swore.
